APPENDIX A:  WORKSTATION AND SERVER QUALIFICATION CRITERIA FOR DCN/ICN COLLABORATION AND INFORMATION SERVICES

A.1.0  INTRODUCTION
The World Wide Web (WWW) is growing rapidly on the Internet network and is slated to quadruple by the year 2000. With the increasing versatility and capability of the WWW, collaboration tools that facilitate the sharing of documents, transfer of speech over the Internet, and the ability to communicate using video techniques have surfaced and have recently assumed significance. The DCN/ICN bases a lot of its functionality on the ability to collaborate in systems design, analysis, integration and support in a CALS environment. With the multitude of types of computers and their specific hardware, it is important and necessary to classify the tools and their functionality for various hardware platforms. Furthermore, the subscriber services offered by the DCN/ICN will be based on core, intermediate and advanced services, each with increasing levels of capability. Given this situation, it is important that a client workstations' hardware meets the overall requirements of the collaboration tools that it must support for being a DCN/ICN node.

This section will outline various workstation and server qualification matrices for the support of these collaboration tools and the functions that are needed for the DCN/ICN to function effectively.

A.2.0  CLIENT WORKSTATION REQUIREMENTS
The multitude of platforms and their specific hardware requirements mandated the generation of the following matrices that are organized in the tier of functionality offered by the DCN/ICN, namely the core (using ASCII Terminals), intermediate (Graphical Workstation) and advanced (Full Multimedia and Development) levels. Each service level has been further broken down into the various generic operating systems and hardware platforms that are available in the industry. We have outlined also the variety of applications that the service levels encompass.

A.2.1  DCN/ICN Core Service requirements
The DCN/ICN core service requirements include the following services/capabilities:

A.2.2  Core (ASCII Terminal Minimum Requirements)
The core level is the fundamental service offered by the DCN/ICN pilot program. This level of service is meant for the subscriber that would like to take a maximum of advantage of the CALS information content offered by the DCN/ICN repository. To take optimal advantage of the core level of service, the client system should be capable of handling E-Mail, newsgroups, events, white and yellow pages, core training, and WWW browsing in a text/graphics based operating environment.

A.2.2.1  Terminal Requirements
Many terminals can meet the basic needs of the DCN/ICN core services. The terminal specifications given below can be used as a general baseline example of a quality client. The terminal must be versatile enough to work in most environments, such as PC, Macintosh or UNIX hosts. The hosts must be connected to the Internet network through either dial up (analog or ISDN) or direct network connect. It must have a choice of emulations and compatibility with many operating systems such as UNIX, VMS, ULTRIX, Pick, Theos. It should support DEC and PC Multinational character sets. A terminal with the following characteristics would suffice.

A.2.3  Intermediate (Graphical Workstation Minimum Requirements)
The intermediate level of service would include all the features of the core services and would provide for information services, technologies, publications, and a limited set of collaboration tools that include document conferencing, Internet telephony, chat forums and Internet conferences. The client workstations given below give representative configurations for the support of all the features necessary for the intermediate level of service.

A.2.3.1  Intermediate DCN/ICN Services Requirements
The DCN/ICN core service requirements include the following services/capabilities:

A.2.3.2  Minimal PC Requirements

A.2.3.3  Minimal Macintosh Requirements

A.2.3.4  Audio Conferencing Tools Matrix
Audio capability over the Internet is fast becoming an alternative to standard telephones as the quality and clarity of speech supported by the tools greatly improve. The DCN/ICN supports Internet audio collaboration products for the delivery of voice in real time to give a higher level of collaboration/interaction between the parties. In support for this goal, Table A.2.3.4-1 summarizes the features of some of the audio tools available in the market today. It must be noted that the tools listed in the matrix do not all have the same level of functionality, nor the same audio quality. In our experience, we have had success with a limited set from this matrix.

Preliminary testing of some of these products has been performed. The current preferred list of DCN/ICN audio capable tools are highlighted in red.

A.2.4.2  Video Conferencing Tools
Videoconferencing can go a long way toward bridging the distance and building relationships among geographically separated collaborators. This is exactly the idea behind having it as a means of collaboration in the DCN/ICN environment. Much like the audio tools, the DCN/ICN supports Internet video collaboration for the delivery of real time video images and provide a higher level of interaction between the parties concerned. Table A.2.4.2-1 summarizes the features and environments of some of the video tools available in the market today. It must be noted that the tools listed in the matrix do not all have the same level of functionality, nor the same video quality. The requirements specified for all the above client subscriber services are to be considered representative configurations and by no means the absolute necessary machine configurations. The qualification matrices will be used to develop bills of materials for implementations of the required services. The qualification matrices, implementation plan of action and milestones, and a test plan for testing the pilot implementations will be used to install and test the collaboration and information services at the DoD pilot project sites and at the Management Operations Control Center providing the services.

A.2.5  Developer Client Workstation Configurations
The PCX client should have these minimum hardware and software configurations:

Desirable features of the client

A.3.0  Internet Server Minimum Requirements
At the center of the MOCC technical operations will be one or more servers for providing the information and collaboration tool support to the clients over the WWW. The access to the DCN/ICN Oracle Database is achieved through a webserver capable of handling the database access and converting the data to the HTML format dynamically.

A.3.1  PC Based Server Requirements

A.3.2  UNIX Based Server Requirements

A.3.3  Internet Server Software Minimum Requirements
The memory and disk space requirements to support Internet services include at a minimum 100 MB of disk space and 32 MB of memory.

A.3.3.1  World Wide Web Servers
All DCN/ICN information services depend on a database connected to a WWW service. When properly configured, the WWW server can act as a "secure" library to the DCN/ICN. The WWW Server can come in many flavors for many platforms. COTS products have been developed for the following platforms. Our preliminary MOCC network design includes Web servers on a Sun SPARCstation 5 and a Windows Pentium Pro NT platforms.

A.3.3.2  PC Desktop Connectivity Requirements
PC clients that connect to UNIX machines for their Internet related activity are to satisfy a certain minimum hardware and software configuration. The clients must be running software that can emulate the host UNIX machine's windowing system to which they are connected. Such software is known as Desktop Emulation Software. Some of the details are shown below.

X Server client compatibility

The PC X client should be able to support the following host operating system environments.

The following host attributes are implied.

A3.3.3  E-Mail (POP3) Servers
POP mail clients require a host computer running a Post Office Protocol Version 3 (POP3) mail server. To run a POP3 E-Mail server, you must first install a POP3 mailer daemon. A wide variety server can be configured to run a POP3 daemon as shown below:

A3.3.4  IRC Chat Servers
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a multi-user, multi-channel chatting network that allows Internet users to talk to each other in real time. It is based on a client-server model. Clients are programs that connect to a server. Servers are programs that transport the messages from one user client to another.

IRC Chat clients require a host computer running an IRC chat daemon. To run IRC service, you must first install IRC chat daemon. A wide variety of servers can be configured to run IRC chat daemon as shown below:
